Here’s Francis Ford Coppola blaming his mixed feelings towards “One Battle After Another” on his hearing loss, and plot confusion.
Coppola wrote on Instagram that he went to see Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest release in Rome, but he’s expressing a desire to explore the story more thoroughly, appreciate the standout performances, and perhaps experience the film under a new set of subtitles.
Sharing his experience on Instagram, Coppola described watching the movie with a full audience, noting that his hearing and the Italian subtitles added an extra layer of challenge. He added that, similar to the approach he takes with Kubrick’s films, a second viewing felt necessary.
Coppola expressed admiration for the way the film blends a suspenseful narrative with contemporary American life, calling it a “fictional thriller grounded in reality.” He also mentioned being intrigued by the film’s 16-year time jump, which caught him a bit off guard.
Coppola has long appreciated PTA’s work. On his Letterboxd list of “Movies That I Highly Recommend,” he includes Anderson’s “Punch Drunk-Love,” marking it as the most recent entry among a collection of older cinematic classics.
