Netflix isn’t wasting any time getting Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s “The Boy in the Iron Box” off the ground.
First optioned back in May 2025, the long-rumored adaptation of the six-part horror novella is now moving full steam ahead, with production reportedly slated to begin this October, according to What’s on Netflix .
Details remain under wraps for now, but the outlet’s sources indicate that the project will take the form of a feature film, not a series, a point of speculation when the rights were first acquired.
Del Toro’s ongoing partnership with Netflix has proven fruitful over the years. From his Oscar-winning stop-motion “Pinocchio” to “Frankenstein,” set for fall release.
‘Boy in the Iron Box is a serialized collection composed of six interconnected stories: “Falling Down,” “The Pit and the Box,” “The Hunted,” “Risen,” “Siege,” and “Encounter.” There have been hints that del Toro would not just be producing but also directing ‘Boy in the Iron Box.’
This latest collaboration reunites del Toro with co-writer Chuck Hogan, with whom he previously co-authored “The Strain trilogy” and “The Hollow Ones.”
The official synopsis reads:
A mercenary team’s plane goes down over a desolate, snowbound mountain. Hoping for shelter, they stumble upon a labyrinthine stone fortress that offers no escape from the bitter cold, or the nightmares inside. As the walls close in and the true nature of the structure reveals itself, a new kind of horror emerges. This isn’t survival. It’s something else entirely..
That said, if “Frankenstein” becomes an awards contender, it’s hard to imagine ‘Boy in the Iron Box’ entering production in the fall, especially with del Toro likely tied up in promotion and campaigning. For now, it’s all up in the air.
