A24 has dropped “Victorian Psycho,” the new psychological thriller from Zachary Wigon (“Sanctuary”).
The film has now landed at Bleecker Street after A24 curiously passed on it. Sources say Bleecker Street was drawn to the project after seeing the script and recognized its potential, jumping at the chance to acquire it.
What’s most interesting is that production had already started in Ireland when A24 dropped it. While it’s unclear at present why A24 left the film, Bleecker seems confident in the project and is eyeing a theatrical release for 2026.
Set in Victorian England, the story follows an eccentric governess who arrives at a remote gothic manor, only to stir suspicion that she is not quite what she seems. Maika Monroe stars in the lead, replacing Margaret Qualley due to a scheduling conflict. Was Qualley’s exit what sealed its fate with A24?
The cast also includes Jason Isaacs and Thomasin McKenzie. The screenplay is adapted from the novel by Virginia Feito, who also penned the adaptation.
Monroe has turned into a sort of scream queen, building up a considerable filmography of frighteners, including “Longlegs,” “It Follows,” “Watcher,” and “The Guest.” She will next be seen in 20th Century’s direct-to-streaming remake of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” this fall on Disney+.
Bleecker Street has a 2025 slate that includes David Mackenzie’s “Relay,” Rob Reiner’s “Spinal Tap II,” Sundance breakout “Rebuilding,” and horror film “Bone Lake.” To say this switch in distribution is a downgrade would be an understatement.
