Ryan Reynolds to Return as Deadpool in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ — How Many Characters Can You Fit in One Movie?

August 15, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Yes, ‘Doomsday’ is currently shooting without a finalized script. Nothing has changed. It’s still being written as we speak. The full cast is also not locked.

Early Tuesday morning, Ryan Reynolds posted an Avengers logo that had been vandalized—Deadpool-style. Naturally, fans immediately speculated: could he finally be sharing the screen with the Avengers?

Turns out… yes.

Sources tell THR that Deadpool will appear in “Avengers: Doomsday.” The real question now is how the studio will balance Deadpool’s signature profanity-laced style with the PG-13 rating. Can the movie retain the character’s humor while keeping it “family-friendly”?

The timing of this news is… interesting. On the same day, reports came in that “Fantastic Four: First Steps” is projected to struggle at $470M. And let’s not even get started on the budget math for Doomsday.

To give perspective: “Avengers: Endgame” cost $356M to make. ‘Doomsday’ already has $90M publicly accounted for—$40M for the Russos, $50M for Robert Downey Jr. With the avalanche of names reportedly attached, I’d be shocked if the final tally is under $400. And that’s me being conservative.

Marvel continues to push the envelope: how many characters can they squeeze into a single movie before it collapses under its own weight?

Updated Doomsday Cast:

  • Robert Downey Jr- Dr Doom

  • Pedro Pascal-Reed Richards

  • Vanessa Kirby-Sue Storm

  • Ebon Moss Bacharach-The Thing

  • Joseph Quinn-Human Torch

  • Anthony Mackie-Captain America

  • Chris Hemsworth-Thor

  • Letitia Wright-Shuri

  • Paul Rudd-Ant Man

  • Simu Liu-Shang Chi

  • Danny Ramirez-Falcon

  • Winston Duke-M’baku

  • Tenoch Huetra-Namor

  • Florence Pugh-Yelena Belova

  • Sebastian Stan-Bucky Barnes

  • David Harbour-Red Guardian

  • Wyatt Russell-John Walker

  • Hannah John Kamen-Ghost

  • Lewis Pullman-Sentry

  • Tom Hiddleston-Loki

  • Patrick Stewart-Professor X

  • Ian McKellen-Magneto

  • Alan Cumming-Nightcrawler

  • Rebecca Romijn-Mystique

  • James Marsden-Cyclops

  • Channing Tatum-Gambit

  • Kelsey Grammer-Beast

  • Chris Evans-Captain America

  • Hayely Atwell-Captain Carter

  • Benedict Cumberbatch-Doctor Strange

  • Ryan Reynolds-Deadpool

This doesn't even include the speculated characters that could very well join the cast in the coming weeks, including Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda), Paul Bettany (Vision), Xochitl Gomez (America Chavez), Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Tessa Thompson (Valkyrie), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Don Cheadle (War Machine) Karen Gillan (Nebula), Iman Vellani (Ms. Marvel), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Ke Huy Quan (Ouroboros), Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau), Will Poulter (Adam Warlock), Dominique Thorne (Ironheart), and Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie).

Principal photography on ‘Doomsday’ began in late April 2025, and most recently Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige mentioned that the screenplay was still under development on set, with daily rewrites and updates in progress.

Feige described this as part of Marvel’s “creative process,” referring to the ongoing script changes as “plus‑ing,” which is “happening every day,” and affirming that rewriting during filming has been a regular feature of their production model.

The Russo Brothers, who are coming off a string of duds, are reportedly directing scenes with only a rough idea of who’s actually in them. What can possibly go wrong?
