Pure speculation, but maybe the “success” of “Happy Gilmore 2” and “Naked Gun” will lead to a few more comedies getting greenlit in Hollywood. Here’s one.
Sources tell Deadline that, following a major bidding war, Universal Pictures has landed the comedy “Dance Parents,” with Charlize Theron and Channing Tatum set to star. Jonathan Levine is attached to direct, with Meghan Malloy writing the script.
Plot details are still under wraps, but the title suggests the story will explore the world of young competitive dancing and their intensely devoted parents. Interestingly, this could mark a dance-floor reunion for the two leads, who shared the stage at the 2013 Academy Awards when they performed together during the show.
Levine has a reliable track record—he directed the critically acclaimed stoner-cancer dramedy “50/50” and the holiday stoner comedy “The Night Before,” which has quietly become a rewatch favorite during the Christmas season. He also helmed the hit comedy “Longshot,” which starred Theron alongside Seth Rogen.
Levine recently wrapped production on the sports drama “Mr. Irrelevant,” starring “Superman” lead David Corenswet.
Malloy, meanwhile, was a writer on the Oscar-winning “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” as well as “Vivo” for Sony Pictures Animation.
