Speaking of “The Naked Gun,” after Thursday previews, the reboot has banked $1.6M and is currently tracking for a $17M opening weekend. Those numbers might not seem massive on paper, but for a theatrical comedy in 2025. The film had a modest $42M budget.
Still, the reboot won’t be enough to knock Marvel’s “Fantastic Four: First Steps” off the top spot. That film is expected to gross between $45-$47M in its second weekend, a 60% drop from last week’s launch.
Universal and DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” an animated sequel, is also in play this weekend. With $2.25M in Thursday previews, it’s expected to pull in $25M. Voice talent includes Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, and Craig Robinson. A second-place finish is all but guaranteed.
Also quietly entering the fray is Neon’s well-reviewed body horror “Together,” which stars real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie. The film opened early on Wednesday and is tracking for $10M across five days. We’re not entirely sure what the budget was on this one, with outlet estimates going anywhere between $5-$10M.
