Netflix, the place where cinema goes to die.
“Trainwreck: Poop Cruise,” a movie whose title alone makes “Sharknado” sound like “Citizen Kane,” has sailed to #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 chart this week, beating out the buzzy sequel “The Old Guard 2,” which landed at #2. In third place? The bizarrely watchable “KPop Demon Hunters,” which is exactly what it sounds like.
“Poop Cruise” was never supposed to be good. It was supposed to be disposable, bingeable background noise for hangovers and laundry days — but somehow, Netflix struck gold.
The documentary tackles the infamous 2013 Carnival cruise in the Caribbean, where a fire knocked out power, leaving 4,000 passengers stranded at sea without electricity or plumbing. You can guess the rest of the story.
Meanwhile, “The Old Guard 2,” the more “respectable” option, didn’t have the necessary fart jokes and cruise ship chaos to land at the top. It doesn’t help that reviews were atrocious for the film, which ends with a limp setup for a third installment — despite star Charlize Theron recently stating she’s not interested in returning.
All of this paints a vivid picture of where Netflix, and possibly humanity, is right now. Prestige is out. Poop is in.
