If you’re one of the few on the underground who champion Adam Rehmeier’s “Dinner in America,” as much as I do, here’s something worth keeping an eye on.
The InSneider is reporting that Rehmeier has quietly started production on his next feature, “A Bobby Thing,” currently shooting in Cape Town, South Africa. Kyle Gallner, who gave a brilliantly spiky performance in “Dinner in America,” is back in the lead.
Gallner is joined by Haley Bennett, an actress who always seems one breakout role away from the recognition she deserves. The two are headlining what’s being described as a low-key, hush-hush project — plot details are being kept under wraps.
Rehmeier has been carving out a niche in the American indie landscape, operating well outside the system with a distinct voice. His most recent film, the coming-of-age comedy “Snack Shack,” was an under-the-radar gem from last year, and he’s already wrapped another feature, “Carolina Caroline,” with Gallner and Samara Weaving, plus a supporting cast that includes Kyra Sedgwick and Jon Gries.
Bennett is coming off “Magazine Dreams” and “The Luckiest Man in America” — both underseen and worth checking out. She was great in 2019’s “Swallow,” and currently has a supporting role in Apple TV+’s “The Last Frontier” with Jason Clarke and Dominic Cooper.
No word yet on when “A Bobby Thing” might be ready, but this one has all the ingredients of a future underground hit. Rehmeier doesn’t make noise — he makes films that find you later. Sometimes much later.
