Tim Burton has revealed he’s returning to his roots.
In a new interview with Mexican outlet MILENIO, the goth auteur confirmed he’s currently working on an animated feature and that he’s now just waiting for the script.
I am working on something as an animated project. So, hopefully I’ll have the script soon and take it from there. It’s something I’m very excited about.
Although he offered no further details about the project’s plot or style, for fans of his animated films, that may be all they need to hear. It’s familiar territory for Burton, who, over the past 40 years, has carved out a number of memorable works in the world of animation.
Burton’s animated filmography includes some of his most beloved and visually distinctive work: “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “Corpse Bride,” and “Frankenweenie” —the latter being his most recent, released in 2012, a black-and-white stop-motion homage to classic monster movies.
The new project follows the success of “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” a film that Burton said “reinvigorated” his love for filmmaking after years of creative enslavement at Disney. Unsurprisingly, a third Beetlejuice installment is now in development at Warner Bros.
Interestingly, despite previous reports, Burton’s rumored “Attack of the Fifty-Foot Woman” remake, scripted by Gillian Flynn, doesn’t seem to be happening any time soon—or at least, he downplayed its momentum during an interview back in December.
