Well, there you go.
James Gunn is telling the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Luca Guadagnino has left the “Sgt. Rock” movie, but that he still wants it to happen with another director.
This aligns with what Gunn told NPR about a project that had reached its second and third draft stages, but simply wasn’t improving “creatively,” which led to him “killing” the entire thing.
“Sgt. Rock” was about to go into production this summer, and then Gunn suddenly pulled the plug on it. So, it is very likely now that we won’t be getting Guadagnino’s iteration of the project, and I presume screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes isn’t attached anymore.
In that same interview, Gunn mentions how James Mangold’s “Swamp Thing” is still very much on his mind, and that he recently spoke to the filmmaker about it. There’s also been some movement on “The Authority,” which might now have a new screenwriter.
Either way, it’s unlikely Guadagnino is losing sleep over not directing “Sgt. Rock.” He quickly filled that summer slot by signing on to “Artificial,” the Sam Altman and OpenAI-centered project that just entered production.
He also has no shortage of projects in development, including “Separate Rooms,” “American Psycho,” “Buddenbrooks,” “Lord of the Flies,” and “Leading Men.” The man is a machine.
