The more Zack Snyder speaks, the more delusional he gets. That’s the only conclusion I can come up with; between his desire to “fix” “Sucker Punch” into a director’s cut and now, again hinting at a third ‘Rebel Moon’ movie, he’s relentless.
Snyder’s losing streak in 2023 and 2024, beginning with the release of four ‘Rebel Moon’ movies, including two director’s cuts, released within eight months of each other, has destroyed his stock. The movies were universally disliked by subscribers and critics alike.
It was just a few months ago that Snyder was hinting at making a third ‘Rebel Moon’ movie, but it was believed the response to the first two instalments had put the idea of a sequel on permanent hold. I’d be very surprised if Netflix decides to greenlight another one … yet, his optimism persists.
Snyder has now shared an update on a possible third film in the Rebel Moon universe. Per Variety, the filmmaker was asked directly if there would be another movie made.
Snyder suggested that the reason no movement has been made was because he had put his focus into a different project. However, he teased that he plans on revisiting the idea of “Rebel Moon 3” after wrapping up his current film, at which point it could potentially happen.
I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie,” Snyder explained. “So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that Rebel Moonworld boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this. And frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.
It’s quite clear that Snyder has no regrets about hopping on board the “Rebel Moon” train, and, based on his own dubious math, believes that more people watched ‘Part 1’ than Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which made $1.4 billion worldwide at the box-office.
Part 1 bombed hard with critics — the most recent tally has it at 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews for the second chapter were even worse (15% on Rotten Tomatoes). If that’s not enough, Snyder told the RadioTimes that, despite lukewarm audience reception, his wish was to make as many as six ‘Rebel Moon’ movies.
Snyder remains ever the optimist. In the meantime, he’s in prep mode on an untitled LA SWAT movie for Netflix, with a casting announcement no doubt coming very shortly.
