TIFF has officially unveiled the first wave of its 2025 lineup — five world premieres that will debut this September. Among the early titles: Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” Nia DaCosta’s “Hedda,” Alejandro Amenábar’s “The Captive,” Sung-hyun Byun’s “Good News,” and Chandler Levack’s “Mile End Kicks.”
The title that stands out is “The Christophers” — is Soderbergh really about to drop his third film of the year? This past spring saw the release of both “Presence” and “Black Bag,” and now it looks like “The Christophers” could be eyeing a fall release as well (it just needs a distributor).
“The Christophers,” which was shot this year, is being described as a “dark comedy” following the estranged children of an artist who hire a forger to complete his unfinished works so they can be discovered and sold after his death. The film features a cast that includes Ian McKellen, Michaela Coel, Jessica Gunning, and James Corden.
Soderbergh is a workhorse. He never stops. Ever since un-retiring in 2017, he’s averaged, at least, one movie or series a year. The prolific filmmaker has moved from psychological thriller, to drama, to comedy, albeit never allowing the films to lose that distinct Soderbergh-ian touch. He’s a genre-hopper, and he does it effortlessly.
