Matt Reeves Still Hasn't Submitted ‘The Batman 2’ Script, Says James Gunn

June 12, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Matt Reeves’ situation has been quietly known within the industry for some time. He’s dealing with a serious matter, and out of respect, I won’t go into details. So, you won’t hear any complaints from me about this latest update concerning his “The Batman” sequel, but nevertheless, it should be mentioned.

Nearly three years after the sequel was first announced in 2022, DC Studios head James Gunn has confirmed that Reeves’ script for the sequel is still in progress. For now, Reeves remains attached as both writer and director, with Robert Pattinson set to reprise his role as the Dark Knight.

Back in March, The Wrap reported on Reeves “sending pages [of the script] for more than half a year,” and that the first full draft was expected to be delivered to Warner Bros and DC Studios by Memorial Day. That deadline has long passed, and now Gunn is simply stating that the script could be headed his way “shortly” (via EW).

What Matt’s doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. We’re supposed to see that script [for ‘The Batman 2’] shortly, and I can’t wait.

Meanwhile, Colin Farrell, who is supposed to reprise his role as The Penguin in Reeves’ sequel, tells THR that he's “nowhere close” to start prepping for “The Batman 2,” which, last we heard, was aiming for a March 2026 production start.

Reeves originally envisioned a full trilogy, writing and directing each installment. The first film debuted in 2022 to strong reviews and box office, but its sequel has faced several production delays since. Alongside Pattinson and Farrell, the sequel will also see the return of Andy Serkis as Alfred, and Jeffrey Wright as Lieutenant Gordon.
