If you’re Mikey Madison, and you’re coming off winning the Oscar for Best Actress, what project do you choose next? That’s, quite literally, the million-dollar question.
She appears to have now lined up her first project following her Oscar win for “Anora,” and is certainly following her gut on this one. It’s not going to be a big payday. Good for her.
Madison is set to star alongside Kirsten Dunst in “Reptilia,” a new film directed by Alejandro Landes Echavarría (”Monos”). The project will be introduced to potential buyers at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
“Reptilia” centers on a dental hygienist who falls under the spell of an enigmatic mermaid, drawing her into the murky and dangerous world of Florida’s exotic animal trade. The screenplay was co-written by Landes Echavarría and Duke Merriman. Filming is expected to kick off in the fall.
Landes Echavarría who began his career in non-fiction, transitioned to narrative features with “Porfirio,” which premiered at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2011. His acclaimed film “Monos” debuted Sundance 2019, earning the World Cinema Dramatic Special Jury Award and winning Best Film at the BFI London Film Festival that same year.
In recent months, Madison has been linked to potential roles in high-profile projects, including a rumored part opposite Ryan Gosling in Shawn Levy’s upcoming ‘Star Wars’ film and Luca Guadagnino’s now-suspended DC project “Sgt. Rock.” She was also offered one of the lead roles in Zach Cregger’s upcoming “Resident Evil” reboot.
Before her breakthrough, Oscar-winning turn in “Anora,” Madison, who just turned 26, was mostly known for her work as the rebellious teenager in FX’s “Better Things.” She also starred in 2022’s “Scream,” and had a supporting role in Tarantino’s “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood.”
