Brandon Cronenberg has received funding from Telefilm Canada to shoot his next film, titled “Dragons.” It will be his fourth feature, following “Antiviral,” “Possessor,” and “Infinity Pool.”
Described as a "space-horror," “Dragons” has Cronenberg teaming up with Marvel Comics writer Dan Abnett, who co-created the 2008 iteration of Guardians of the Galaxy, which became the basis for James Gunn’s hit movie franchise.
Set in the near future, “Dragons” envisions a society radically transformed by the discovery of ancient organic lifeforms drifting through the cosmos—creatures whose alien biochemistry has been processed into a highly profitable drug described as an “opiate of the masses.” The film follows a captain and her crew as they hunt these “dragons” in deep space, seeking to secure a comfortable future.
The project was originally slated to shoot in 2017, shortly after Cronenberg released “Antiviral,” but something happened—clearly a delay of some kind—and the project was shelved. Now that he’s a more prominent director, it seems he has the capacity to secure a larger budget to bring the film to life.
