As is often the case with early social media reactions, it’s wise to take them with a grain of salt—but so far, things are looking positive for Celine Song’s sophomore feature, “Materialists,” which has begun press screenings in New York and Los Angeles.
A24 is set to release “Materialists” nationwide on June 13. The film stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, and centers on an ambitious matchmaker in New York City who finds herself caught between two men—one of whom is her flawed ex.
Song’s debut, “Past Lives,” was a breakout hit at Sundance and ultimately earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Given that level of acclaim, expectations for her follow-up are understandably high, especially among critics who lauded her first film.
