Alfonso Cuarón directing the next James Bond might have hit a bit of a snag. I’m hearing it’s not happening. He’s not going to direct the 26th instalment. I’m not sure exactly why, maybe he got cold feet — maybe a deal fell through.
And yet, all the signs were pointing towards it happening. During a masterclass in Paris, Alfonso Cuarón hinted at rewiring Bond “if [a deal] happens.”
A month before that, a source inside of Amazon/MGM was telling Jeff Sneider that Bond producer David Heyman was potentially eyeing Cuarón to direct the next 007 instalment.
A few weeks later, Matt Belloni revealed that he’d also heard Cuarón could direct Bond 26, adding that the filmmaker had met with Amazon with a new “take” for how the next one would look like.
Amazon wants to move quickly and have a team ready once the $1 billion rights deal is closed with Barbara Broccoli. Writers have already been hired for Bond 26; They just need a director now.
Back in the aughts, Cuarón had been offered the chance to direct Bond, but he was quickly turned off when he found out that a separate Broccoli-approved team would be handling the action sequences.
Cuarón is coming off the Apple TV+ series Disclaimer, but he hasn’t directed a film since 2018’s Roma. He’s expected to hop onboard something in the coming months. Sadly, it might not be Bond—and quite frankly, I would have loved to see that happen.
