Readers’ Thoughts on ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning’? What’s The Best Film of the Franchise?

May 24, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is now playing in theaters. The eighth—and possibly final—installment of the franchise earned $16M on Friday and is expected to bring in $60M domestically by late Sunday evening.

Sadly, I don’t think the film delivered. It features one jaw-dropping underwater action scene, but beyond that, I was underwhelmed.

This is a franchise where you’re supposed to leave logic at the door, not take the plot too seriously, and simply marvel at the spectacle director Christopher McQuarrie puts together. The problem here is that the film is overstuffed with nonsense and has very few genuine thrills.

I imagine many of our readers are planning to see it on the big screen—or may have already caught an early showing. What did you think? Where does it land in your personal “Mission: Impossible” rankings?

I reviewed it last week and would rank it as the second worst film in the series—slightly above John Woo’s “Mission: Impossible II,” and just below “Mission: Impossible III.”

For my money, the best entries have been “Ghost Protocol,” “Fallout,” and “Rogue Nation.” I also have a soft spot for Brian De Palma’s 1996 original, but considering how the franchise’s style and tone have evolved over the past 30 years, that film now feels more like an anomaly, and its own unique entity.
