Box-Office: ‘Final Destination’ $53M, ‘Sinners’ Beats ‘Thunderbolts’

May 18, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

“Final Destination: Bloodline” has defied expectations at the box office. ‘Bloodlines’ is expected to bring in around $53M during its opening weekend. It’s another major win for Warner Bros who have been on a hot streak, coming off the equally successful “Minecraft” and “Sinners.”

To think, ‘Bloodlines’ was initially planned as a streaming-only release on HBO Max, and only switched to theatrical in August 2024. Goes to show how important theatrical can be for a film.

With three straight blockbuster hits, Warner Bros. has “Superman,” “Weapons,” and “One Battle After Another” coming up next. They are also handling distribution on “F1,” which is an Apple-produced film.

Ryan Coogler’s vampire neo-western, “Sinners,” continues to perform well in its fifth week, expected to earn an additional $15M after. The film hit $300M globally, with $225M of that total coming from the domestic box office.

“Sinners” will slightly edge out Marvel’s “Thunderbolts,” which might not even hit the $200M domestic mark — it’s going to be at $150M by Sunday. As for its worldwide tally, “Thunderbolts” is at a limp $286M. Given its $180M budget, and marketing costs, it might not break even.

The MCU has entered unfamiliar ground. At this point, it seems they’re struggling to attract audiences unless it’s for a major ‘Avengers’ event. They’ve boxed themselves in creatively, and it’s hard to see a way forward without taking some serious hits. The era of guaranteed success has clearly coming to an end.

Finally, it seems like “Hurry Up Tomorrow” only lured fans of The Weeknd as — hurt by terrible reviews — it’s aiming for a $6M opening by Sunday evening. The budget on the film is around $15M.
