James Mangold to Direct “Top Secret” Netflix Project

May 14, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Hollywood loves James Mangold.

No, really, he’s turned into one of the go-to “hired hands” in the industry. A talented filmmaker who doesn’t mind adhering to the creative control that studios enforce upon him. Not an auteur, in the truest sense of the term, but with titles such as “Ford v Ferrari,” “Logan” “3:10 to Yuma,” and “Cop Land” in his filmography, not too shabby either

Mangold, a five-time Oscar nominee who most recently directed the Bob Dylan movie “A Complete Unknown,” is developing his first movie at Netflix, according to The InSneider’s sources.

Little is known about the” top-secret” project, but it’s being described as a change-of-pace from Mangold’s typical fare, which includes plenty of R-rated movies. This one is said to be straying away from that. I expect the trades to soon reveal what the film is about.

Regardless, we can add this film to a bucket of projects Mangold currently has in development, including “Swamp Thing,” a Buster Keaton biopic for 20th Century, a new Star Wars movie at Lucasfilm, and the Shakespeare-inspired “Juliet.”

Mangold’s most recent film, “A Complete Unknown,” grossed $140M worldwide before going on to be nominated for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. Mangold himself earned three Oscar nods for co-writing, directing, and producing the film; he was previously nominated for “Ford v Ferrari” and “Logan.”
