Bi Gan's ‘Resurrection' Has A Teaser

May 13, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

I’ll be arriving at the Cannes Film Festival this evening. I tend to skip opening day since competition titles don’t start screening until Wednesday, but I am kicking myself for missing the 4K restoration of Chaplin’s “The Gold Rush,” which is set to screen at the Debussy theater in a few hours.

With that said, we have a teaser for one of the more anticipated competition titles: Bi Gan’s “Resurrection.” This will be the Chinese filmmaker’s first time competing for the Palme d’Or. If you can believe it, filming on this one wrapped just a few weeks ago, and a fresh cut was quickly submitted to Cannes. It sounds like Gan was simultaneously shooting and editing the film.

This sci-fi detective story unfolds in a futuristic world where dreaming is a rare power possessed only by a so-called “monster.” A woman, portrayed by the acclaimed Shu Qi, discovers she can enter these dreams and is driven to uncover the deeper truths they conceal. “Resurrection,” which is 160 minutes, is Gan’s third film, after the acclaimed “Kaili Blues” and “Long Day’s Journey Into Night.”
