Sydney Sweeney to Star in Reddit Adaptation — Written by Eric Roth

March 20, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

The background behind this one is wild.

Four years ago, a high school English teacher named Joe Cote posted a short story on Reddit, and now it’s being turned into a feature film starring Sydney Sweeney and penned by Eric Roth (“Forrest Gump”).

A heated bidding war occurred over the rights to Cote’s story, and Warner Bros. ended up winning the package. No director is yet attached, but I'm thinking a big name could hit a home run with this story — although Roth should changed the ending.

Cote’s story centers on a young woman who shows up at a family’s doorsteps ten years after their 18-year-old daughter went missing. She tries to convince the family that she is their missing child.

You can read Cote’s OG post, titled “I pretended to be a missing girl so I could rob her family, which had been submitted on the r/nosleep subreddit.

Roth is one of the most sought-after screenwriters in the business and has been showered with acclaim throughout his career. Some of his more notable works include “Forrest Gump,” “The Insider,” “Munich,” and “Dune.” His last “credit” was for Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

Meanwhile, Sweeney has been all the rage in Hollywood these last few years. She broke out with 2019’s “Euphoria” and has now graduated to feature films, including “Anyone But You,” “Immaculate,” and an upcoming Christy Martin biopic.
