Darren Aronofsky in Talks to Direct ‘Cujo’ for Netflix

March 18, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

It’s always interesting to see what the genre-hopping Darren Aronofsky will do next. He already has “Caught Stealing” coming out in August, and an Elon Musk biopic in the works. He’s added another project to his itinerary.

According to The InSneider, Aronofsky is teaming up with Netflix and set to direct the Stephen King adaptation “Cujo.” A writer is expected to be hired in the coming weeks, which probably means Aronofsky can continue with his plans to direct his Musk biopic in the fall.

King’s 1981 bestseller follows a St. Bernard that gets bit by a rabid bat and goes loco, trapping a mother and her young son in a car while leaving a trail of bodies outside the vehicle. There was a film made out of King’s source material back in 1983, by director Lewis Teague.

This would be Aronofsky’s first collaboration with Netflix, and given that “Cujo” doesn’t scream “awards season!” one has to wonder if the streamer would even roll out the film theatrically.

Aronofsky is the definition of a hit-and-miss director. With every film, and he’s only directed eight in the last 25 years, Aronofsky tries to make something different, every single time. He swings for the fences. It’s always interesting to see what he does next.

I wasn’t big on “The Whale,” just as I didn’t care for “Noah,” “mother!” and “The Fountain”. However, he’ll always be a worthy filmmaker in my books for having directed three great films — “The Wrestler,” “Black Swan” and “Requiem For A Dream.”

As mentioned, up next for Aronofsky is “Caught Stealing,” starring Austin Butler and Zie Kravitz, which is set for August 27 theatrical release via Sony.
