Colin Farrell in Talks For Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Sgt Rock’

March 17, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

After Daniel Craig suddenly dropped out of the DCU project, some wondered if Luca Guadagnino would be able to shoot “Sgt Rock” this summer. Good news: Colin Farrell has just come in and blasted the project forward.

Farrell, recently seen in another DC project, HBO’s “The Penguin,” will portray the titular gung-ho character in Guadagnino’s film. The WWII action movie will reunite the “Challengers” team of Guadagnino and screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes.

Although Farrell is close to signing on, one thing complicating the matter is that he has two movies due to debut in the fall awards season (”Ballad of a Small Player” and “Big Bold Beautiful Journey”), and if he starts shooting “Sgt Rock” in late summer, this could hamper promotional efforts.

Set in the ‘40s, the character of Sgt. Frank Rock can be seen as a symbol of patriotism during the United States’ battle against the Nazis in World War II. Leading Easy Company against the worst evil man has ever faced, Sgt. Rock is supposed to represent the “emblem of America's fighting spirit.”

Guadagnino is very serious about his DCU movie — he's bringing along trusted collaborator Sayombhu Mukdeeprom as his cinematographer on “Sgt. Rock.” It’s an eclectic choice, and I’m loving it. It has me much more interested in Guadagnino’s DCU film.

I previously reported that Oscar-winning duo Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross would be scoring the film. There's also costume designer Jonathan Anderson (”Challengers,”” Queer”) who will be along for the ride.

“Sgt Rock” is supposed to be the next project within James Gunn’s DCU to hit production, after “Superman” and “Supergirl.” No surprise, a rumored Memorial Day 2026 release date is being planned by Warner Bros.
