Oscars Considering Rule Requiring Best Picture Contenders to Disclose AI Use

With recent controversies involving “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Perez,” Variety is now reporting that other 2025 best picture nominees have also been caught using AI, including “Dune: Part Two” and “A Complete Unknown.”

Reading the report, you start to realize just how extensive AI usage is in Hollywood. It’s now come to the point where the Academy is seriously considering changing submission requirements for The Oscars so that films are forced to disclose their use of AI.

Governors and Branch executive committees are now investigating how AI is used in each branch with an eye toward making disclosure mandatory in the 2026 Oscars rules.

One mention of AI in the industry, and people start to shudder. Total meltdowns occur; AI in Hollywood represents not just the stifling of human creativity, but also the loss of many jobs. That is why it played a major role in union negotiations during 2023’s SAG-AFTRA strikes.

With AI becoming more present in some corners of filmmaking, it may be time to accept that it’s here to stay and, to a certain extent, will continue to be used. With that said, how far can you be allowed to go in its usage? As much as I believe the ‘Emilia Perez’ and ‘Brutalist’ controversies were overblown, I agree with this. The least we can have is full transparency when it comes to this topic.
