Christopher McQuarrie Says ‘Mission: Impossible 8' is the “Conclusion to A 30-Year Story Arc"

February 6, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Is Ethan Hunt about to be killed off?

Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise are keeping mum about whether their upcoming “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” will be the franchise finale, or at least the last one for Cruise’s Hunt.

An interview with Empire Magazine gives a clear indication as to how Cruise and McQuarrie will be dodging questions from the press about the future of this franchise.

“You gotta see the movie,” laughs Cruise when asked if the film is his franchise swan song. “It’s a hard thing for me to discuss at the moment, because it really is something that you have to experience.”

Cruise does describe the film as “an epic, emotional journey of the entire franchise,” an odyssey of sorts. “It’s Homeric,” he promises.

McQuarrie is similarly hesitant to say anything. “It is the satisfying conclusion to a 30-year story arc,” he says. “I’m pretty confident that people are going to feel that the title was appropriate.”

Cruise, one of the last remaining old school movie stars, is 63 and still performing dangerous stunts on-screen. At some point, his body won’t be able to continue on with the physical demands. With whatever remaining years he has left as an action movie star, Cruise has no doubt thrilled us with some of these ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies.

Paramount recently moved ‘Mission: Impossible 8’ from its original June 2024 date to May 23, 2025, delaying it by a full year. A recent THR report stated that the studio, and Cruise, very much want this one to have its world premiere at next May’s Cannes Film Festival.
