Martin McDonagh’s ‘Wild Horse Nine’ to Star Sam Rockwell, John Malkovich & Mark Ruffalo — Shoots in March

February 5, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: Variety is reporting that Parker Posey has also joined the cast of McDonagh’s next film.

In December, I had exclusively reported that Martin McDonagh’s next film would be “Wild Horse Nine,” which was set up at Searchlight. The film had Sam Rockwell attached to star. A 2025 shoot was being prepped up for this one.

Deadline now reports that John Malkovich and Mark Ruffalo have joined Rockwell in the cast. It’s quite possible that Malkovich has replaced Christopher Walken who was originally supposed to co-star.

Production is set begin in March 2025 in Easter Island, a “protected Chilean wildlife area known for its unrivalled cultural landscape.” It’s known as the most remote inhabited island on Earth. No plot details have surfaced just yet.

Last year, McDonagh, who is coming off the most acclaimed film of his career, 2022’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” was interviewed by Hong Kong outlet RTHK, and hinted that his next film would again be taking place in a remote island:

I think the next thing might be set in an Island, not in Ireland, like in ‘Banshees,’ but again to have the island be a character. So, that’s a scoop for you, I think that’s going to be the next thing.

As mentioned, McDonagh is coming off ‘Banshees of Inisherin’ which received nine Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. His other works include “In Bruges,” “Seven Psychopaths” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
