Last night at the SAG awards, Timothée Chalamet won for “A Complete Unknown,” and his speech was straight out of Kanye West’s playbook. He was manifesting about his shades of greatness, but it didn’t feel as off-key, or unsubtle, as some of Kanye’s rants. Chalamet is aiming for GOAT status.
I know we're in a subjective business, but I'm really in pursuit of greatness. People don't usually talk like this, but I want to be one of the greats. I'm inspired by the greats. I'm inspired by the greats here tonight. I'm as inspired by Daniel Day-Lewis, Marlon Brando, and Viola Davis as I am by Michael Jordan and Michael Phelps, and I want to be up there. So I'm deeply grateful to that. This [award] doesn't signify that, but it's a little more ammo, a little more fuel to keep going. Thank you so much.
What do our readers think? Chalamet is 29 and already thinking about his legacy. I respect the ambition. Chalamet’s filmography already includes stellar performances in “Call Me By Your Name,” “Lady Bird,” “Dune” and “A Complete Unknown”; if he were to win the Oscar next Sunday, he’d become the youngest actor in history to do so.
