Karla Sofía Gascón to Attend Oscars

February 21, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

While Netflix has stopped paying for Karla Sofía Gascón’s awards appearances, which is why the Oscar nominee has been M.I.A. from awards shows these last four weeks, nothing will come in the way of the “Emilia Perez” star attending the Oscars.

The New York Post’s Sarah Nathan confirms that Oscar-nominated Gascón will pay for her own flight to L.A. to attend the Academy awards ceremony on March 2. This should be fun to watch.

Gascón, who will not attend this coming weekend’s SAG awards, has already missed the Critics Choice, AFI, PGA and Goya Awards, and was a no-show at the BAFTAs in London on Sunday night. However, this might be the only time Gascón gets Oscar nominated, so to hell with it — one ticket to Los Angeles, please.

Tensions have been high between Gascón and Netflix, the streamer invested $30M+ in the “Emilia Perez” awards campaign only to witness Gascón‘s past tweets derail it into near extinction. It’s become such a dire situation that the streamer is now refusing to provide transport and accommodation to Gascón.

Gascón was recently forced to apologize for old tweets defending Hitler, insulting Muslims, castigating George Floyd, blaming Chinese people for the pandemic, and blasting the 2021 “Afro-Korean” Oscars. The apology Gaston released tried to paint the actress as an ally of the “marginalized,” but that narrative predictably backfired.

The most recent Netflix FYC ads for “Emilia Perez” did not have Gascón’s name appearing anywhere. Other nominees, such as director Jacques Audiard and Supporting Actress Zoe Saldana, could be spotted. Netflix has basically thrown in the towel.

Gascón will probably not win the Oscar, but nothing should stop her from attending the ceremony; the nomination was bestowed, the invite sent and now the Academy must reap what they sowed.
