Box-Office: ‘Brave New World’ Projected to Have -67% Second Weekend Drop

February 19, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

It’s often said that second weekends could seal a movie’s fate at the box-office. The percentage of the change between opening and second weekend numbers tends to be used as a gauge for a film's overall commercial success. With that said, “Captain America: Brave New World” might be in trouble.

Given the low audience scores, and word of mouth having now firmly spread, this was to be expected. “Captain America: Brave New World” might have a steep -67% drop in its second weekend at the box office — the film is currently projected to earn only $30M from Friday through Sunday.

‘Brave New World’ is coming off a decent $87M opening weekend, and that was despite earning an MCU worst B- on Cinemascore. Marvel hopes that the film’s second weekend drop doesn’t match those of record-holders “Ant-Man and the Wasp” (-70%) and “The Marvels” (-78%.) — both of those went on to be used as examples of “superhero fatigue.”

Meanwhile, “The Monkey,” Neon’s second Oz Perkins movie, is expected to have a healthy $18M debut. It’s set to open on Friday in over 3200 theaters. Perkins’ $10M costing ‘Monkey’ is coming off last year’s “Longlegs” which, thanks to some nifty Neon marketing, ended up earning over $126M worldwide
