Just updating: an email has been sent out to the press notifying them that the trailer for Craig Gillespie’s “Supergirl” will be unveiled this coming Thursday, December 11.
This comes a few days after James Gunn took to social media to deny a Forbes report that the “Supergirl” budget sits at around $200M. In a post on Threads, Gunn shot it down, saying it’s “not even a little bit true.”
The honest truth is that the character of Supergirl has never really had mainstream pull. She’s always existed in the shadow of Superman. The 1984 Helen Slater movie? A cult footnote at best. The CW series? Middling ratings and culturally DOA.
It is now up to Gillespie and Gunn to prove there is an appetite for this character on the big screen. The character did show up, for a brief minute, in James Gunn’s “Superman,” and I did slightly start to warm up to the idea of a film based on this reckless and drunkard character.
Then there’s the casting. Milly Alcock—who stole the show in HBO’s “House of the Dragon”—landed the lead role. If there’s any chance this movie hits, Alcock’s performance will be the reason. She’s got presence.
Regardless, and make no mistake about it, “Supergirl” is a gamble. Gunn’s DCU needs to continue the momentum next year with this and “Clayface,” the latter set for September.
“Supergirl,” which also stars Jason Momoa, David Krumholtz, and Marye Knoll, recently wrapped production and is slated for a June 26, 2026, release.
