Casting is starting to heat up on Martin Scorsese’s “What Happens At Night,” which already stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
What a great addition it is to have Mads Mikkelsen joining DiCaprio and Lawrence in Scorsese’s psychological thriller. Has there been a recent film Mikkelsen hasn’t elevated? (via The InSneider).
Mikkelsen rose to prominence through his leading role in Bryan Fuller’s “Hannibal” series and his portrayal of the villain Le Chiffre in “Casino Royale.” His most notable credits include performances in two Thomas Vinterberg films (“Another Round,” “The Hunt”) as well as collaborations with Nicolas Winding Refn (“Pusher,” “Valhalla Rising”).
The Apple-produced “What Happens At Night” is based on Peter Cameron’s novel of the same name, with the screenplay adapted by Patrick Marber (“Closer”).
As far as which role Mikkelsen might tackle, I’m purely guessing it’s the businessman, one of the characters DiCaprio’s character will meet at the eerie Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel — the character has no name, simply described as a “debauched businessman.” It’s implied he is of Scandinavian origin.
“What Happens at Night” follows an American couple in a snowy European town to adopt a baby. Staying in a nearly deserted hotel filled with enigmatic figures—a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a magnetic faith healer—they confront a strange world that challenges their marriage and sense of reality.
Yesterday, I reported that four-time Oscar nominee Rodrigo Prieto will once again serve as Scorsese’s cinematographer, with production set to begin in February in the Czech Republic.
As Scorsese begins prep on “What Happens at Night,” more casting announcements are expected in the coming weeks, with several key supporting roles still left to be filled.
