A gorgeous, '70s-style poster for David Fincher's "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth" has finally been released, and you can see it below. It’s the film’s first poster, 23 days away from release.
You might remember that a few weeks ago another ‘Cliff Booth‘ poster went viral, with plenty of people (myself included, briefly) assuming it was official. It turned out to be fan-made. This one is the real deal, and it's much better — retro art that looks like it was pulled straight off a 1977 one-sheet.
Now the less exciting part. ‘Cliff Booth’ opens November 25, over Thanksgiving weekend, exclusively in IMAX, now on only, roughly, 200 screens. That's barely three weeks away, and there's almost no buzz. For a movie that brings together Tarantino, Fincher and Brad Pitt, the rollout has been weirdly muted.
It gets worse. Last week the film lost about 150 IMAX screens after Regal and Cinemark decided to boycott it, cutting its footprint from around 350 screens to roughly 200.
Has Netflix cooled on this? I think it's a fair question. I hope I'm wrong. It's still one of the most anticipated films of the year for cinephiles, but the footage released so far has barely made a dent. And when exactly are press screenings happening? Does Netflix not see this as an awards player?
There have been rumblings that Fincher needed robust reshoots to get the film where he wanted it, and then Netflix film chief Dan Lin refused Fincher’s request, instead giving him a week of additional photography. Some believe that Fincher’s frustration is why he decided to not resign with Netflix, his home for the last 15 years.
I recently posted plot details, which, for the record, didn't come from Netflix. The streamer still hasn't officially said what the film is about. The gist: it's 1977, eight years after "Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood." Cliff (Pitt) works as a bartender and projectionist while moonlighting as a Hollywood fixer. Agent Karen Crosby (Debicki) hires him on behalf of her client, TV star Charlie Peters (Caan). That pulls Cliff into a noir-tinged world involving Charlie's wife Toni (Gugino), football-star-turned-actor "Hot Rod" Harrison (Abdul-Mateen II) and the gangster Verdusco brothers.
Pitt leads a cast that includes Elizabeth Debicki, Scott Caan, Carla Gugino, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Peter Weller. The film still has no MPA rating, by the way. Knowing how meticulous Fincher is, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still tinkering in the edit.
Callum Turner has stepped down as a director of Twentytwo Films, the production company he launched last August, and the British tabloids are already reading it as a sign he's clearing the decks for James Bond.
