Craig Gillespie’s “Supergirl” has unveiled a two-minute teaser. What do we think? It looks like a riff on “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Not sure I’m sold on this yet.
Milly Alcock—who stole the show in HBO’s “House of the Dragon”—stars in the lead role. If there’s any chance this movie hits, Alcock’s performance will be the reason. She’s got presence. The film also stars Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, Jason Momoa, David Krumholtz, and Marye Knoll.
“Supergirl,” which James Gunn recently “debunked” had cost $200M, is certainly a gamble. Gunn’s DCU started off strong with “Superman,” and needs to continue the momentum next year with this and “Clayface,” the latter set for September 2026.
Gillespie, best known for his highly stylized filmmaking, “I, Tonya,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” “Cruella” and “Dumb Money,” is a decent choice to direct. The trailer hints at Gillespie’s usual quirks: dynamic editing, bold visuals, and needle-drop-heavy soundtrack. Ana Nogueira wrote the script.
The character of Supergirl has never really had mainstream pull. She’s always existed in the shadow of her more iconic cousin. The 1984 Helen Slater movie? A cult footnote at best. The CW series? Middling ratings and culturally DOA. There just hasn’t been much proven appetite for this character on a big screen. Maybe Gillespie and Gunn will change that.
A “Supergirl” movie has been a long time coming—first entering development in 2018, then being delayed by the 2020 pandemic, shelved under new Warner Bros. boss David Zaslav in 2022, and finally revived and reworked in 2023 as part of Gunn’s DCU.
“Supergirl” is slated for a June 26, 2026, release via Warner Bros.
