Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey’ Dropped by Lionsgate — Shot in 2023, Still Needs Reshoots

November 6, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey” quietly slipping into release limbo.

The film, starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González, wrapped principal photography back in summer 2023 after a two-month shoot under a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement. Lionsgate had even circled January 17, 2025, as its theatrical release date. Then, suddenly, in November 2024, the studio pulled the movie from its release calendar.

We now have an update on the film via Deadline’s interview with Black Bear’s president (Benjamin Kramer) and owner (Teddy Schwarzman). Turns out, “In the Grey” is back on the market — Lionsgate dropped it. Kramer and Schwarzman have “no comment” on the situation, but given Black Bear’s recent foray into distribution, maybe they’ll just end up releasing Ritchie’s film themselves.

The official word from Lionsgate was that “In the Grey” simply wasn’t finished, with reshoots and pickup shots delayed for months due to scheduling conflicts. Since then, things went quiet. According to one source, the main issue was scheduling — everyone’s calendars are completely out of sync for the planned reshoots. A few delays snowballed into more delays, and now the whole thing’s turned into a real mess.

“In the Grey” tackles two extraction specialists who are tasked with devising a route of escape for a high-level female negotiator. The logline says the story involves “a group who operates in the middle of criminality and the law.”

In the meantime, Ritchie hasn’t exactly been sitting still. He’s already released “Fountain of Youth” for Apple TV+ (which hit streaming in May) and has moved on to “Wife & Dog,” currently in post-production and also looking for distribution. He recently dropped out of directing “Road House 2” and hopped on board a “Layer Cake” sequel starring Jason Statham — set to shoot in January. In fact, Ritchie has directed and released four films and two TV shows in the last three years.

Given the high-profile cast and the studio backing, the fact that no release date has been announced for “In the Grey” means it’s likely not coming out any time soon. Will the reshoots even happen? Or will it just go unreleased?
