Fernando Meirelles’ ‘Here Comes the Flood’ Starts Production, Stars Denzel Washington & Robert Pattinson

November 5, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s an interesting update when it comes to what will definitely be one of bigger Netflix movies coming up the pipeline.

Fernando Meirelles’ “Here Comes the Flood,” an ambitious heist film starring Denzel Washington and Daisy Edgar-Jones, has begun production in New Jersey. They’ll be shooting this one until late January.

Meirelles, the Brazilian filmmaker best known for “City of God,” “The Constant Gardener,” and “The Two Popes,” is returning to genre filmmaking with Kinberg’s twist-filled script.

The film has seen considerable changes over the past few years. Jason Bateman was initially attached to direct in 2021, and at one point Robert Downey Jr. was also in discussions to join. Still, one constant in the latest version of the project is Simon Kinberg’s script, which has remained in place.

A case for concern: Kinberg’s best-reviewed films are “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” “Sherlock Holmes,” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” His filmography is otherwise fairly mediocre, including “XXX: State of the Union,” “Jumper,” “This Means War,” “Dark Phoenix,” “The 355,” and “Fantastic Four” (2015).

Described as an “unconventional heist movie,” “Here Comes the Flood” will reportedly center on a bank guard, a teller, and a master thief caught in a web of deception and shifting alliances. Expect cons within cons, layered betrayals, and a slow-burn intensity that matches Meirelles’ knack for visually driven storytelling.

While Washington recently confirmed that he’s working with a variety of directors on upcoming projects, including Ryan Coogler and Steve McQueen, this collaboration with Meirelles is next up.
