Much has already been written about Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another”; the raves, the Oscar buzz, the high budget, the modest box office, the conservative backlash.
For those who unwisely skipped the film in theaters and waited it out for streaming, I come bearing good news: the film will be available to stream via VOD on November 20. For physical-media absolutists, the 4K UHD and Blu-ray hit stores on January 20—just two days before Oscar nominations are announced.
It’ll garner plenty of nominations. Right now I have Anderson’s epic getting multiple noms in acting (Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro), not to mention Picture, Director, Screenplay, Cinematography, Score, Editing, Casting and Sound. That’s 11 nominations.
As for the box-office receipts: Variety recently claimed Warner Bros. stands to lose $100M+. But it might have been worth it just for those 11 Oscar noms alone, and it’s quite possible the film will have a lasting shelf-life on streaming.
