Now that Rian Johnson’s “Knives Out” deal has run out at Netflix, he’s already set up his next film — one he also wrote — and it’s now seeking a distributor. The genesis of the project dates back to an idea he had right after making “Looper.”
Although no cast or plot details have been revealed yet, all we know is Johnson describing the story as a ’70s paranoid thriller with “a tinge of sci-fi.” Johnson is now telling Variety that he aims to shoot this mysterious film in 2026.
He’ll most likely be shopping it around to studios in the coming months. Given his frustration with Netflix’s theatrical rollouts for the “Knives Out” movies, I highly doubt they’re in play. I can see Warner Bros. potentially taking this on.
Johnson, a talented filmmaker, despised by Star Wars purists for ruining their baby, has amassed a filmography that so far includes three “Knives Out” movies — including the upcoming “Wake Up Dead Man” — as well as “The Last Jedi,” “Looper,” “The Brothers Bloom,” and his debut, “Brick.”
