UPDATE: “Godzilla Minus Zero” is set to debut in North America on November 6 through Toho and GKids. The date is just three days after its premiere in Japan. A first poster was also revealed, which can be seen below this article.
EARLIER: Toho is moving full steam ahead with a sequel to “Godzilla Minus One,” and the next installment will hit theaters next year.
Takashi Yamazaki is returning to direct, and will again handle writing and visual effects duties. While Toho had previously remained tight-lipped on whether “Minus One” would get a follow-up, the film’s staggering success — both critically and commercially — made a sequel all but inevitable.
At Godzilla Fest 2025, held on Monday’s Godzilla Day at Tokyo’s Kanadevia Hall, the title of the next film in the franchise was officially unveiled: “Godzilla Minus Zero.” The announcement also featured the debut of the film’s logo, hand-drawn by director Takashi Yamazaki (seen above).
As for what the title signifies, fans will have to wait. While “Godzilla Minus One” alluded to events set before the original 1954 “Godzilla,” the official reveal offered no further explanation, teasing instead, “Stay tuned for further updates.”
Could this new entry serve as a reimagining of the 1954 classic? That’s what The Wrap seems to be hinting at. For now, it all remains a mystery, and speculation will only grow until more details emerge.
With a reported higher budget and expanded scope, the next film quietly started shooting three months ago. Though early rumors questioned whether the new project would serve as a direct continuation, recent comments from Yamazaki suggest it will indeed follow the events of “Godzilla Minus One,” with further development of the central characters. This is a straight-up sequel.
Toho hasn’t set an official release date, but an April report hinted that the plan was for a late-2026 release. We’ll see if the quick turnaround works out for them, but they’re clearly looking to hit bigger bank the second time around.
“Minus One” was the 37th film in the franchise, and Toho’s 33rd Godzilla film. Recently, Guillermo Del Toro gushed over “Minus One,” writing that it’s one of the “Top 3 Godzilla films of all time (actually top two).” It wasn’t just Guillermo who raved about “Minus One” — other filmmakers who professed their love for the film include Steven Spielberg and Christopher Nolan.
Still no distributor for "Bucking Fastard," "Alpha Gang," "The Last Photograph," "Closing Night," and "The Life and Deaths of Wilson Shedd." The issue seems to be quality more than a lack of willingness to buy.
