Guy Ritchie’s ‘In the Grey,’ Shot in 2023, Still Needs Reshoots, and Might Not Hit Theaters Next Year

October 17, 2025 Leora Witkowski

Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey” has quietly slipped into release limbo — and no one seems to be talking about it.

The film, starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González, wrapped principal photography back in summer 2023 after a two-month shoot under a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement. Lionsgate had even circled January 17, 2025 as its theatrical release date.

Then, suddenly, in November 2024, the studio pulled the movie from its release calendar. The official word was that “In the Grey” simply wasn’t finished, with reshoots and pickup shots delayed for months due to scheduling conflicts. Since then, things have gone eerily quiet, though industry chatter suggests that those long-postponed reshoots may finally have taken place earlier this year.

According to one source, the main issue is scheduling — everyone’s calendars are completely out of sync for the planned reshoots. A few delays snowballed into more delays, and now the whole thing’s a bit of a mess. It’s reached the point where, if these reshoots don’t happen soon, the film might not be ready for release in 2026.

Gylenhaal, who shot three films this year, has not had any time to fit these “In the Grey” reshoots into his schedule.

Meanwhile, Cavill recently injured himself while training for Chad Stahelski’s “Highlander,” which was originally set to begin production in September. With the four-month shoot now rescheduled to start in January, plans for additional photography on Ritchie’s film have been pushed to the back burner.

In the meantime, Ritchie hasn’t exactly been sitting still. He’s already released “Fountain of Youth” for Apple TV+ (which dropped in May) and has moved on to “Wife & Dog,” currently in post-production. He recently dropped out of directing “Road House 2,” which is now in production. In fact, Ritchie directed and released four films and two TV shows in the last three years.

Given the high-profile cast and the studio backing, the fact that no release date has been announced for “In the Grey” means it’s likely not coming out any time soon.
