SAG Nominees: ‘Wicked' Triumphs; Pamela Anderson Surprises! Angelina Jolie & Nicole Kidman SNUBBED! Jonathan Bailey?

January 8, 2025 Jordan Ruimy

The Screen Actors Guild nominees have been announced.

As you might know, SAG is a strong precursor; there’s a ton of overlap between the SAG acting nominees and the Oscars. You’ll usually have 3-4 nominees in each acting category being recognized by the Academy. The stat for Oscar/SAG winners is at about a 80% match.

The two blatant omissions from this morning’s announcement are Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) and Angelina Jolie (“Maria”) in the Lead Actress category. SAG wants us to believe that Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”) and Cynthia Erivo (“Wicked”) gave better performances. Hilarious. Kidman deserved a spot, she’s incredible in “Babygirl.”

In fact, SAG loved “Wicked.” The blockbuster musical ended up nabbing nominations in four of the five film categories, including (surprise!) Jonathan Bailey for a performance I barely remember in the Supporting Actor category. Bailey got in, but there’s no Guy Pearce (“The Brutalist”), Denzel Washington (“Gladiator II”) and Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”).

You also have to love Jeremy Strong (“The Apprentice”) surprising everyone and getting into the Supporting Actor category. Fully deserved. His ‘Apprentice’ co-star, Sebastian Stan, was sadly snubbed.

Speaking of “Sing Sing,” the film is now at risk of not getting Best Picture nominated at the Oscars. It didn’t get an Outstanding Cast nom either, which is a major red flag. I’m now thinking “A Real Pain” is our #10 in the Best Picture lineup.

It got even spicier in the Supporting Actress category. Monica Barbaro (“A Complete Unknown”) got a much deserved nom, and so did Jamie Lee Curtis (“The Last Showgirl”). Snubbed were would-be contenders Isabella Rossellini (“Conclave”), Felicity Jones (“The Brutalist”), Margaret Qualley (“The Substance”), Selena Gomez (“Emilia Perez”) and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (“Nickel Boys”).
