Zach Cregger to Direct ‘Resident Evil' Reboot; Exits ‘Clue' Movie

September 23, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Last week, it was reported that Zach Cregger (“Barbarian”) was in talks to direct the new “Clue” movie. Cregger has now exited that project for another Sony reboot …

Within 72 hours, and Cregger formally passing on “Clue,” apparently due to an issue of money — Sony offered him $1.5 million against $4 million — the filmmaker is now attached to helm the studio’s ‘Resident Evil’ reboot. And Sony can afford to meet Cregger’s quote for that project (via The InSneider).

Cregger is clearly interested in expanding his horizon into IP, and the Resident Evil franchise, which has already had seven movies to its name, will have the filmmaker overseeing “a full reboot that would start from scratch”. The last ‘Resident Evil’ installment was released almost 10 years ago.

Cregger turned a lot of heads in late 2022 when “Barbarian” became a critical and commercial success, grossing $45M against a skimp $4.5M budget.

Cregger has shot his next film, “Weapons,” recently dated for January 16, 2026, release, and coming to us with very high expectations. Cregger’s spec script was so hot that it spawned a bidding war, between multiple studios. Warner Bros/New Line won the rights, buying it for a whopping $38M.

Don’t be surprised if “Weapons” moves its release date to summer or fall 2025. It’s supposed to test screen this week, and reactions, if glowing, could convince Warner Bros. to give it an earlier rollout, especially since the film wrapped principal photography in the summer. That 2026 date always seemed a little off.
