‘Alien: Romulus' $6.5M in Previews, $45M+ Weekend Expected

August 16, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

This weekend sees “Alien: Romulus” rolling into theaters with decent reviews to its name. ‘Romulus’ is a greatest hits mashup of the first two films, and that should please genre fans enough to have it top the box office this weekend. Audience word of mouth is said to be strong.

‘Romulus’ nabbed $6.5M in Thursday previews. The film is currently headed towards a $45M opening weekend. This is a vast improvement when compared to 2017’s “Alien: Covenant” and it also has a smaller budget ($80M) than that one. If it gets some major last-minute legs, it could potentially exceed 2012’s “Prometheus” which had a 3-day opening of $51M.

So, it does look as though “Deadpool & Wolverine” will finally be dethroned, and it might even fall to #3 because “It Ends With Us” has been outgrossing it all week. We’re looking at three big earners at the box office this weekend. After a slow start, the summer movie season has had an impressive turnaround in its second half. Next week’s sees the release of “Blink Twice” and “The Crow.”
