Readers’ Poll Names ‘Challengers’ Best of 2024, So Far

July 5, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

I tried to avoid posting our mid-year readers’ poll the same week as our critics’ poll. Once you see the results, you’ll understand why.

Over 200 of you voted, and the top 10 has the exact same films as in the critics’ poll. However, if Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” was tops for critics, then readers instead opted to crown Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” as the #1 film of 2024, so far. Guadagnino’s film beat Villeneuve’s epic by just a single vote.

It should be noted that readers far preferred “Late Night With the Devil” to critics — the film finished #10 on this poll, compared to #18. Same goes for Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s “About Dry Grasses,” #12 with readers compared to #20 with critics.

1) “Challengers” (Luca Guadagnino) — 51 votes
2) “Dune” (Denis Villeneuve) — 50
3) “Civil War” (Alex Garland) — 38
4) “Furiosa” (George Miller) — 32
5) “Love Lies Bleeding” (Rose Glass) — 30
6) “I Saw the TV Glow” (Jane Schoenbrun) — 28
7) “Hit Man” (Richard Linklater) — 26
8) “La Chimera” (Alice Rohrwacher) — 23
9) “The Beast” (Bertrand Bonello) — 21
10) “Late Night With the Devil” (The Cairnes) — 15
10) “Evil Does Not Exist” (Ryusuke Hmaaguchi) — 15
12) “About Dry Grasses” (Nuri Bilge Ceylan) — 10
