Edward Berger, David Michod & Kelly Marcel Contending to Direct Next James Bond

July 2, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

UPDATE: So, Sneider’s Bond piece is up. As suspected, Edward Berger is the current frontrunner to direct Bond, but it’s the other names in contention that are more surprising.

David Michod is another director being name-dropped by Sneider as a possibility. Michod is currently editing a “new version” of his upcoming A24 stoner dramedy, “Wizards!, which test screened late last year. We might expect that one to be released in the fall. His other filmmaking credits include “Animal Kingdom,” “The Rover,” and “War Machine.”

Sneider then mentions Kelly Marcel, who wrote all three of those ‘Venom’ movies and has actually now graduated to directing the new one (“The Last Dance”), set for release this fall. Marcel also adapted “Fifty Shades of Grey,” “Cruella” and “Saving Mr. Banks.”

EARLEIR: Last night, I reported that Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) was a potential serious contender to direct the next James Bond. At the very least, he’s definitely had discussions, maybe not official meetings, with producer Barbara Broccoli about the gig.

Turns out, I outscooped Jeff Sneider who was going to report on the Berger/Bond intel in his InSneider newsletter. It sounds like the job is between Berger and another female filmmaker, and Sneider will be revealing tonight who that other director is. Stay tuned.

Take note, a female filmmaker has never helmed a Bond movie. If producer Barbara Broccolli wants to go in that direction, then I would hope she’d find a good talent. Kathryn Bigelow would be the obvious and best choice, then there’s also Patty Jenkins, who recently exited the ‘Wonder Woman’ franchise.

I’ll update this post when more intel comes in …
