Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix sci-fi film “Atlas” has been the #1 streamed movie in America for two weeks in a row. It’s so far racked up 119.4M hours viewed on the service. If you remember, Lopez’s “The Mother” was the most streamed Netflix film of 2023.
I actually find this quite interesting as there seems to now be a new type of movie star in the streaming era, one which audiences wouldn’t necessarily pay to see in theaters but would gladly watch on streaming. Adam Sandler is another such example. How legitimate is this drawing power?
“Atlas,” which I haven’t seen, has been destroyed by critics. The film is at 20 percent on Rotten Tomatoes (based on 92 reviews) and 37 on Metacritic (based on 27 reviews). Audience scores aren’t any better, a 5.6 on IMDb, which begs me to wonder if the token Netflix viewer doesn’t mind watching mediocrity. Probably.
