We already know that Michelle Yeoh is in the cast of “Blade Runner 2099.” Yeoh has signed on to play the role of Olwyn in the forthcoming Prime Video series which recently started filming in Europe.
It now looks as though Hunter Schafer (“Euphoria”) has been cast in the lead role, as Cora. Schafer is also the lead in the upcoming Berlin-premiered indie thriller “Cuckoo,” but this ‘Blade Runner’ gig is certainly a major career promotion.
Daniel Richtman recently revealed plot details for “Blade Runner 2099,” which does not have Ridley Scott in any sort of creative position:
In Los Angeles 2099, Cora (Schafer) lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she assumes one final identity and is forced to partner with Olwen (Yeoh), a Blade Runner who’s confronting the end of her life. The two are pulled into a widening conspiracy that poses an existential threat to a city that’s fighting to be reborn.
So, the “Blade Runner” limited series spin-off is definitely happening. Jonathan Van Tulleken was recently confirmed as director of the limited series. Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”) is the writer, creator and showrunner. I’m curious to see how this all works out.
According to Deadline, Tullkenen came on board to replace Jeremy Podeswa (“Game of Thrones”). The reason for Podeswa’s departure was noted as a “scheduling conflict” due to the WGA and SAG strikes. Tullkenen directed the first two episodes of FX’s acclaimed “Shogun”. His other credits include “The Changeling,” “Upload,” “Trust” and “Wonderdate.”
“Blade Runner 2099” is the same series that Ridley Scott was supposed to direct — he’s now listed only as an executive producer. A potential 2025 premiere is being eyed on Prime.
