Spike Jonze's “Ambitious" Netflix Sci-Fi Series Might Start Production Soon

June 21, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

Here’s an interesting update on that Spike Jonze sci-fi series, produced by Netflix.

We’ve all been wondering what Jonze has been up to. Since his 1999 debut, “Being John Malkovich,” Jonze has only directed four films in a span of 25 years. His last one was the 2013 sci-fi romance, “Her.”

That absentee film streak will likely continue, but not without Jonze dabbling into a Netflix endeavor that, with the little details that we do know, sounds intriguing.

Jonze has actually been developing this project for a few years now and it’s been in pre-production since 2022. Puck had previously reported that Jonze was set to direct this “ambitious” and “lavish” sci-fi series for Netflix which had “a writers room and a broad, expansive canvas.”

Rumors pointed towards Joaquin Phoenix starring in Jonze’s series, but it does sound as though last year’s strikes have complicated those prior commitments, and his replacement could be announced very soon. Imminently, in fact. I’ll leave it at that as I know someone who is currently working on this story.

I don’t care what the series is about or the format that it’s being told in, but if Jonze is given a big budget to splatter his wild vision on-screen, then that’s more than enough to have this one high up on our 2025 must-see list. Inject this one straight into my veins.

As mentioned, Jonze has directed only four films in his movie career, they are 1999’s “Being John Malkovich,” 2002’s “Adaptation,” 2009’s “Where the Wild Things Are” and 2013’s “Her.”
