A24 Reveals its Fall Movie Slate — David Lowery's ‘Mother Mary' Still in Production ...

May 30, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

A24 has dated its five fall releases, with a few more titles left to be announced including, I’m being told, “Y2K,” “On Becoming A Guinea Fowl,” “Parthenope” and a few docs.

First off, I’ll tackle what many are buzzing about when it comes to this press release: the noted absence of David Lowery’s “Mother Mary.” It turns out, the film is still shooting! I’m told the production schedule for that one was broken up due to filming some specific scenes and venues. It could very well sneak into the 2024 calendar, maybe in December, but it’s a TBC for now.

Lowery’s film is a musical starring Anne Hathaway, Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer. It started shooting in May 2023. Described as an “epic pop melodrama” it follows a fictional musician (Hathaway) and her relationship with an iconic fashion designer (Coel).

Judging by their current lineup, it does look as though the well-reviewed “Sing Sing,” starring Colman Domingo, set for summer release, will be A24’s main Oscar player this year. It’s been receiving great reviews ever since its quiet debut at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. The film is currently 96% fresh on RT.

Max and Sam Eggers’ horror film “The Front Room,” starring Brandy Norwood, Kathryn Hunter and Andrew Burnap, will be released in theaters on September 6. It follows a woman’s mother-in-law who moves into her and her husband’s home, and proves to be the house guest from hell.

Aaron Schimberg’s “A Different Man,” which premiered at Sundance, is dated for September 20. The film, starring Sebastian Stan, Renate Reinsve and Adam Pearson, tackles an aspiring actor, who undergoes a radical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. Expect this one to possibly hit TIFF.

John Crowley’s “We Live in Time” could hit NYFF, which occurs just days before its mid-October release. Starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, it’s going limited on Oct. 11. The film tackles an up-and-coming chef who finds her life forever changed by a chance encounter with a recent divorcée. The plot is said to span a few decades.

On December 20, A24 will open the erotic thriller, “Babygirl” from writer director Halina Reijn. Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Antonia Banderas, and Sophie Wilde star in a film tackling a high-powered CEO who puts her work on the line when she begins a steamy affair with her much younger intern.
