Cannes Lineup Revealed! Coppola, Arnold, Baker, Lanthimos, Schrader, Audiard and More

April 11, 2024 Jordan Ruimy

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival lineup was finally revealed on Thursday, April 11.

Last night I received a shortlist of the 25 films Cannes was eyeing for competition. So far, 19 have been announced. Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux is saying that up to three more films might get added in the next few days and weeks.

The films on the shortlist that still haven’t shown up yet in the lineup are Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths,” Lou Ye’s “Two or Three Things,” Michel Hazanavicius’ “The Most Precious of Cargoes,” Walter Salles’ “Ainda estou aqui,” Jessica Palud’s “Maria,” Kirill Serebrennikov’s “Disappearance” and Aude Léa Rapin’s “Planete B.”

As for Audrey Diwan’s “Emmanuelle,” I stated last night that it wouldn’t show up in lineup. It was, sadly, rejected by the Cannes selection committee. Now, its aim is Venice.

Yes, Kirill Serebrennikov submitted TWO films, and they were both on the Cannes shortlist for competition. The one that didn’t make it, “Disappearance,” was rushed, fresh off post-production, and sent over to Cannes. They decided to choose the other title, “Limonov,” starring Ben Whishaw.

The notable names in competition include Francis Ford Coppola, Yorgos Lanthimos, David Cronenberg, Andrea Arnold, Sean Baker, Jacques Audiard, Paul Schrader, Paolo Sorrentino and Jia Zhangke.

The major surprises, which I reported on yesterday, are Magnus von Horn’s “The Girl With the Needle.” This one was a shocker when I saw it on the shortlist. His last film was the 2020 Cannes label, “Sweat,” but he’s now been upgraded for Palme d’Or contention.

Also, Payal Kapadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” from India. The last Indian film selected for the Palme d'Or race was Mrinal Sen's "Kharij in 1983. Kapadia is best known for "A Night of Knowing Nothing" which premiered in the Director’s Fortnight section back in 2021.

However, the biggest shock must be Coralie Fargeat’s “The Substance,” which is a genre film, along the lines of “Titane” that, according to Fremaux, is “very bloody.” It stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley! Fargeat’s last film was the horror-thriller, “Revenge.” What was a film meant to be in the Midnight section has now been upgragded for Palme d’Or contention.
